Step by step: how the 4 hours are spent

Weather contingency: if conditions on Fjallsjökull are unfavourable, the hike may move to a nearby outlet glacier. You still get both parts, but the boat tour and the hike are done separately the same day.

Versus a Skaftafell (Falljökull) glacier hike

Skaftafell is the glacier-hiking hub of the south coast, 40 minutes west. Hikes there walk in from a car park and several operators share Falljökull, so its lower tongue is busy from late morning in summer. They are cheaper and offer shorter, easier versions that accept younger children. Fjallsárlón's hike costs more because it bundles a boat tour, and in return you get an outlet glacier with no foot access and a group of at most 10. Gear fitting for both boat and hike happens before departure and the boat leaves on time; 30 minutes covers check-in, jacket and restroom.
